The NBAA announced the first round of business aviation entities that achieved the new Sustainable Flight Department Accreditation. Since IATA announced the industry goal to have a zero-emission airline by 2050 and achieve sustainable aviation, the industry has made many sustainable changes. The industry is pushing boundaries with electric or hybrid-electric aircraft and sustainable fuel to achieve net-zero emissions. The new program was launched this year and includes four independent accreditations: flight, ground support, operations and infrastructure.
The four categories will highlight the diversity of business aviation entities and different emissions scopes. The NBAA accreditation program judged entities in the four categories for impact on the common goal of sustainability and reducing environmental impact. The goal is to encourage companies to think and act critically and to implement sustainability strategies.
The initial awardees include:
• Mente LLC in flight
• Monarch Air Group, DBA Mercury Jets in operations
• Netflix in flight, operations, ground support and infrastructure
• Steelcase, Inc. in flight
• Textron Aviation, Wichita Service Center in ground support
“This is a pivotal moment for our industry’s commitment to sustainability. We are taking bold strides to drastically reduce our impact on the climate and meet our goal of net-zero flight by 2050,” NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen said. “We know the way forward, we have a strong vision, a deep commitment and the ingenuity to make this a reality.”

The four categories looked into how those aspects of aviation made an impact. According to the NBAA, this would mean reducing the environmental impact in flight, optimizing sustainability culture through travel and programs like recycling or reduction of resources in operations, implementing sustainable strategies for vehicles and equipment in ground support and advancing the physical structures like hangars and facilities in infrastructure.
Other entities were accredited by the NBAA and chose to remain anonymous. This is the first group of 2022 awardees and audits will continue throughout the year, according to the NBAA. These are the inaugural recipients out of the many that will be recognized in the future.
The NBAA said they would continue to recognize companies as they achieve this accreditation.
