Redbull has a history of sponsoring aviation stunts to a varying degree of success, but this one was fun to watch. Brazilian skater Letícia Bufoni, a five-time X Games gold medalist, combined skateboarding and skydiving.
Using a C-130 aircraft used in the Fast and Furious movie franchise and a skydiving expert from the Mission Impossible film series, Bufoni grinds her way out of the plane, sliding down a rail and into a freefall at 9,000 feet.
Bufoni had been trained by Red Bull Air Force member Jeffrey Povenzano for months beforehand. The Sky Grind project is one of the most extreme Red Bull stunts to date, uniquely combining aviation and skateboarding. Bufoni skates along ramps in the plane before grinding on a handrail out of a cargo door, freefalling in the sky before opening her parachute. It’s something Trevor Jacob could only dream of attempting.
“It’s crazy to think that I’m the first person to skateboard inside an airplane and do a feeble in the air. That’s something I didn’t know if it was possible or not,” Bufoni said in a story for Redbull. “I still don’t believe that it happened. I’m dreaming. It looks like it hasn’t hit me yet. It happened and was much better than I imagined. That was one of the greatest days of my life.”

This record-breaking grind was another in a list of exceptional accomplishments for this skater. Bufoni, who has been skating since age nine, moved from São Paulo to Los Angeles to further pursue her career after her first X Games competition at 14.
Bufoni is a pioneer for women in skating, as the first woman signed to the Nike SB team, the first woman on the cover of The Skateboard Mag. She has starred in her own Brazilian reality TV show and was selected to be a member of Brazil’s first national skateboarding team. As a leader for women in skateboarding, Bufoni is setting a daring example for future female skaters.
