Van Nuys Airport (VNY) will soon break ground on its expansion plans, which have been met with opposition from local residents. The proposed expansion includes a $13.1 million runway improvement project.

VNY is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world and the 730-acre airfield is one of the heaviest trafficked airfields of its size, also the busiest for private jets in the LA area, according to KTLA.

The airport does not currently have scheduled flights so planes may take off and land at any time of the day. KTLA reported that a jet takes off or lands one every seven minutes and often ignores the quiet hours between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

As the airport expansion plans were announced, the public voiced their contention with the already noisy conditions living near the busy airport. The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) held an in-person meeting, the first in years, so the public could discuss the increased number of jet flight growth at VNY and late-night noise concerns.

The community surrounding the airport fears the proposed expansion will worsen the current concerns over airport traffic and noise levels. LAWA reported that VNY jet operations have increased since 2020. The public spoke of their concerns in the council meeting, “The community doesn’t want all those private jets so the one percent can fly out of a convenient location…it’s not convenient when you can’t breathe,” local resident Sue Steinberg said, according to KTLA.

VNY also brings an economic boost to the city, which many feel warrants the expansion. A follow-up meeting will take place on March 7.
