Southwest Airlines today began charging for checked bags booked and ticketed or changed on or after May 28 and shared this week what those fees would be. The carrier in March announced plans to end its “two bags fly free” policy.
For the carrier’s Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus and Anytime fares, the first checked bag is $35, and a second checked bag is $45. Business Select fares and Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members still get up to two checked bags for free.
Rapid Rewards A-List members get a first checked bag for free, while a second checked bag will cost $35. Rapid Rewards credit card holders get a first checked bag for free, and a second checked bag will cost $45.
The fees are in line with what other U.S. carriers charge for domestic checked bags. During the first quarter of 2024, JetBlue, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines each increased their baggage fees.
On American the first bag is $40, or $35 if paid online, while the second bag is $45. Alaska and Delta each charge $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second bag. United charges $40 for the first bag, $35 if prepaid, and $50 for the second bag, $45 if prepaid.
JetBlue has different fees for peak and off-peak flights, as well as for those checked within 24 hours of departure compared with bags checked more than 24 hours before departure. For off-peak flights, the first bag is $35 if checked more than 24 hours prior to departure, or $45 if within 24 hours. The second bag is $50 if more than 24 hours before a flight, or $60 if within 24 hours of departure. For peak times, the first bag is $40 if checked more than 24 hours before departure, $50 if within 24 hours. The second bag is $50 if prior to 24 hours before departure, or $60 if within 24 hours.
