Signature Aviation achieves carbon neutrality across global network

Signature Aviation, the world’s largest private aviation terminal operator, has announced it achieved carbon neutrality for 2022 across its global network of over 200 FBO locations. As the industry pushes for net-zero carbon emissions and a carbon-neutral airline by 2050, sustainable technology and advances are pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible for aviation. Signature is the first aviation firm to achieve this feat.

Signature’s sustainable efforts and investment in carbon neutrality have included emissions from all ground equipment, vehicles, facilities, electrical and natural gas heating and buildings (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions). The company has also committed to maintaining carbon-neutral operations for every year going forward, making Signature Aviation the first private aviation company to make a network-wide commitment of this scale.

7 applicants in running for FBO opening at Aspen airport

Signature Aviation is one of seven companies that applied for the FBO opening at the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE). In the requirements for the new FBO, the applicant must outline plans for sustainable operations. The green movement stems across the industry, from advances in unleaded avfuel and alternative power sources like hydrogen.

“We recognize the significant challenges and responsibilities for the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, and we look forward to meeting those challenges, if we are the successful respondent, as the world’s most environmentally focused private aviation terminal operator,” Signature Aviation CEO Tony Lefebvre said.

“Our past year of conversations with the Aspen community has impressed upon us the community’s passion for reducing its carbon footprint,” Lefebvre said. “We are committed to helping Pitkin County achieve its goal of a 30% reduction in emissions by 2030 and the Net Zero by 2050 commitment, should we be the successful bidder. This commitment is consistent with Signature’s values and actions to date across our company.”

Signature is also building on its Eagle County Airport (EGE) FBO location as a testing spot for other sustainable innovations. The company is building on sustainability across its network. Eagle County FBO was the first in Signature’s network to achieve carbon neutrality in the Fall of 2022, aided by the establishment of a supply chain for SAF in the Colorado Rockies, on-site solar generation and various facility and fleet upgrades that resulted in a15 percent reduction in fossil-fuel emissions for 2022.

With its commitment to continuing carbon neutrality across its network, Signature will continue with its sustainable efforts in projects like growing the supply of SAF in the Rocky Mountain region and offsetting emissions of all aircraft in Aspen, both private and airline flights included. The efforts in the Rocky region are in addition to the reduction efforts for the company’s carbon footprint.

Efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint include the largest electric tow vehicle fleet in private aviation and the most construction projects to date, certified to LEED environmental design standards among FBO companies. Signature has also used solar power longer than any other FBO operator.

The latest announcement is a huge step in the effort towards the goals set forth in 2020, aligning with the target of the Paris Agreement to limit warming to no more than 34.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

“We’ve set out to achieve ambitious emissions reduction targets, and rather than just making promises, we are proud to deliver real, quantifiable progress by becoming the first FBO to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire global network,” Lefebvre said. “Committing to carbon neutrality from this moment on builds on a real track record of significant environmental investments that have already yielded a 22% reduction in our own emissions since 2018.”

“It was important for us to take our entire network to carbon neutrality instead of ceremonially doing so at a few regional locations. Climate change is a global challenge and the commitment to carbon neutral operations going forward ensures we are reaching every community that Signature serves today and will in the future.”
