Jetstar Asia, the Qantas Group’s intra-Asia airline, will cease operations after July 31, Qantas announced Wednesday. The low-cost carrier, based in Singapore, for the next seven weeks will operate flights “on a progressively reduced schedule.”
Jetstar Asia’s 13 Airbus A320 aircraft will be redeployed to Australia and New Zealand, according to Qantas. The closure will affect 16 intra-Asia routes, with no changes to Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Japan services into Asia. All of Jetstar Airways’ international services in and out of Australia remain unchanged, according to Qantas.
The closure comes with the “rise of supplier costs, high airport fees and intensified competition in the region,” negatively affecting the LCC’s “ability to deliver returns,” according to Qantas. The carrier had operated for more than 20 years.
Jetstar Asia customers with existing bookings on canceled flights will be offered full refunds, and Qantas will look to reaccommodate customers onto other airlines where possible, according to the company.
