Pipistrel receives South Korea's first safety certificate for electric aircraft
Pipistrel announced on Tuesday that it has received the first safety certificate for a Pipistrel Velis Electro from the Civil Aviation Authority of South Korea.
This is the first time the country has issued a safety certificate to an electric aircraft. Pipistrel states that it is the first Velis Electro certification in Asia and the occasion opens new opportunities in the market. The first Velis Electro delivered in South Korea went to TOFF MOBILITY in 2024. TOFF supported the research, inspections, flight testing and demonstrations of battery-powered electric flight to help achieve the safety certificate.
“The approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of South Korea represents a landmark achievement for Pipistrel, signifying our pioneering introduction of electric aircraft technology into the Asian market and reinforcing the Velis Electro’s expanding global footprint,” said Gabriel Massey, president and managing director of Pipistrel. “It’s a testament to our team’s dedication and innovation, and it significantly advances our mission to lead the charge in sustainable aviation, opening new doors for electric flight across the continent.”RELATED STORIES:

The Verlis Electro is the first and currently only in-service, commercially available, type-certified fully electric aircraft. The aircraft was classified as a lightweight aircraft on the certificate due to its maximum take-off weight of 600 kilograms. Pipistrel claims the aircraft has a low-noise profile of only 60 decibels. It features user-friendly avionics designed for flight training with zero emissions.
The aircraft has also received EASA type certification in 2020, UK Civil Aviation Authority certification in 2022, FAA Light-Sport Aircraft airworthiness exemption in 2024 and Transport Canada EASA type certificate in 2025.
