The CLIMBING. FAST. Capitol Hill Fly-In was held on March 18 for a series of meetings between with congressional lawmakers and staff.
The goal of the meetings was to advance policies supporting the industry’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, while strengthening American energy independence and supporting rural economies. It was organized by the NBAA as part of the CLIMBING. FAST. initiative, a branded, multi-platform industrywide advocacy campaign meant to showcase the industry’s societal benefits to policymakers and opinion leaders.
Members of NBAA’s Environmental Committee urged Congress during the fly-in to advance bipartisan legislation to increase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. NBAA reports that business aviation has reduced its carbon footprint by 40% over the past four decades and claims that the use of SAF over traditional jet fuel could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%.
“The reduced tax credit has made it more financially advantageous for producers to make renewable diesel instead of SAF,” said Scott Cutshall, president of real estate and sustainability at Clay Lacy Aviation and committee co-chair. “Restoring the credit to $1.75 is critical to give producers the confidence to continue building production capacity.”

Domestic SAF production could increase U.S. GDP by over $78 billion by 2035 and would support more than 400,000 jobs at peak production, according to the Americans for Clean Aviation Fuels Coalition. The initiative states that domestic production would create new opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
“Members of Congress need to hear directly from their constituents about why these priorities matter,” said Kristie Greco Johnson, NBAA senior VP of government affairs. “Today’s CLIMBING. FAST. fly-in demonstrated that business aviation leaders across every segment of our industry – from airports to manufacturers to operators – are united behind policies that would accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions while strengthening American energy independence and supporting rural economies.”
