Lufthansa, ITA Airways to Expand Codeshare

The Lufthansa Group on July 1 will enable codesharing on select ITA Airways long-haul flights as it continues its integration of the Italy-based carrier into its stable of airlines, the Germany-based company announced Wednesday.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, in January closed a €325 million deal to acquire 41 percent of ITA. Soon after, it began to implement a codesharing program and started aligning loyalty programs.

Examples of the flights to be brought into the codesharing offer include Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt and Munich via Rome with ITA Airways to Bangkok, Jeddah and Riyadh; with Brussels Airlines from Brussels to Cairo; and with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines from Vienna via codeshare flights via Rome to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, according to Lufthansa. The company said it would announce additional codeshare flights to Africa and Asia in the coming weeks.

More than 100 codeshare flights for select domestic Italian and European flights were made available in March, according to Lufthansa. In addition, members of the Miles & More or Volare loyalty programs can earn and redeem miles and points on codeshare flights.
