Joby Aviation has announced that it has completed its purchase of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business, which it announced its plans on Aug. 4.
The purchase gives access to Blade’s established network of terminals and flyers across key areas of the New York City and southern Europe markets. Joby claims it will position its eVTOL air taxi for faster entry into commercial service. Blade operations flew over 50,000 passengers in 2024 from 12 terminals located at key bases such as the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and the Newark Liberty Airport (EWR).
“By combining Joby’s aircraft with Blade’s established network, we’re creating an unmatched foundation for bringing quiet air travel to market,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby. “Blade’s loyal flyers will be among the first to experience this new mode of transportation, and over time we look forward to making it even easier to access, integrated seamlessly into the apps and services people already use every day.”

As part of the agreement, operations will continue as a wholly-owned subsidiary led by its founder and CEO Rob Wiesenthal, but will transition from helicopters to eVTOL. Joby will also be the preferred VTOL for Blade’s organ transport business, which will remain a separate company renamed to Strata Critical Medical, at any location Joby operates.
