Cirium: Air Canada Leads as May N. American On-Time Average Tumbles


Average May on-time performance for North American carriers tumbled 4.4 percentage points month over month to 76.4 percent, according to the latest report from aviation analytics company Cirium.

Each of the 10 reporting carriers reported declines in May compared with their April on-time performance. Spirit, last month’s leader, had the largest drop of 7.5 percentage points to 75.8 percent, followed by JetBlue with a drop of 6.5 percentage points to 76.3 percent.

Air Canada, which in recent months regularly has landed in the bottom third of reporting carriers, came out on top in May with an on-time performance of 79.1 percent, 0.7 percentage points below its April average. Its decline was the lowest month-over-month among North American carriers. 

Delta Air Lines was second at 79 percent, down 4.9 percentage points. Alaska Airlines rounded out the top three at 78.7 percent, down 4.1 percentage points from April.

All but one carrier had a May on-time performance average of at least 75 percent. Frontier was last with 69.9 percent. 

None of the North American carriers were among the top global airlines for May on-time performance, which again was led by SAS (89.7 percent) and had a weighted average of 86.1 percent.

Three North American carriers had May completion factors above 99 percent: Alaska (99.6 percent), Delta (99.4 percent) and WestJet (99.1 percent).

In May, North American cancellations reached 10,576, higher than the 6,645 in April.

A flight is considered on time if the aircraft arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival time.
