Women in Aviation week is March 6-12, celebrated across the world by female aviators and future women in the field.
Women all over the world will participate in Women of Aviation Week events, like Fly It Forward flights which offer girls of any age with no previous experience in aviation a flight in a small aircraft. The program also gives girls a chance to win prizes and scholarships.
The Fly It Forward program was founded in January 2010 by the airline-rated pilot and aviation educator, Mireille Goyer. Goyer used her own money and offered world titles and awards for pilots and airports that introduced the most women and girls to flight. Since then, over 1,600 women and girls have discovered a passion for aviation in 36 countries on four continents.
The Pink Paper Plane Challenge celebrates the anniversary of the world’s first female pilot license. Participants can download a template to create a paper plane. Pictures can win awards for categories like most people holding planes and most unusual location. During WOAW, take a picture with a pink paper plane to set a world record for most pink paper plane locations and raise awareness.
Another way to participate is through creation. Anyone, regardless of gender, can create artwork or media to show spirit for female aviators and a chance to win the WOAW Creator of the Week Award. Show your pride for women in aviation and creative skills by participating in the Inspiration Challenge.
According to the international WOAW organization, nearly 78 percent of women and girls that attend local outreach events report that the experience has been life-changing. The Second Step Challenge motivates these participants to join the industry. The challenge rewards candidates that are the first to achieve specific training milestones with awards or Fly It Forward scholarships.

Garmin is celebrating by inviting 60 high school girls across its region, the most ever to attend the event. Kctv5 reported that the girls will be able to explore planes and technology, use flight simulators and fly the planes themselves. The Garmin Women of Aviation will lead the girls through the experience, sharing their own journey in the male-dominated field.
The weeklong event honors the first female pilot license but celebrates the long history that followed and the many female aviators that have led and inspired the next generation of women in aviation.
