American Airlines on June 5 launched its new premium Boeing 787-9 aircraft with 244 seats and its new Flagship Suite and upgraded premium economy and main cabins, the airline announced Thursday.
The carrier announced its long-haul premium refurbishment plans in September 2022, with aircraft expected in 2024, but delivery delays pushed out that date.
The 51 lie-flat suites in the front of the aircraft—of which eight are Flagship Suite Preferred seats, with up to 19 percent more bed space and 42 percent more living area, according to American—include privacy doors, expanded personal storage space, a wireless charging pad, a reading light, mirror, a chaise lounge seating option and a Brandon Blackwood amenity kit.
Flagship Suite customers also receive priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling, and access to American’s Flagship lounge when on international long-haul flights.
The 32 premium economy seats feature privacy headrest wings, adjustable calf and footrests, a wireless charging pad and water bottle storage. There also are 18 Main Cabin Extra seats and 143 main cabin seats, each with power outlets and 4K QLED monitors. All three cabins have Bluetooth connectivity and USB-C and AC power.
American will fly the new aircraft on its Chicago-London route, and will launch it on Aug. 6 on its Philadelphia-London route and on Sept. 3 on Philadelphia-Zurich service. For the winter season, beginning Oct. 26, the aircraft will operate on flights between Dallas Fort Worth and Brisbane, Australia.
The carrier currently has received two of the premium Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Thirty more are on order, with eight expected to be delivered in 2025, according to American.
