Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 Completes First Flight, Targets 2027 Entry
Textron Aviation has completed the first flight of the Citation M2 Gen3, moving the light jet one step closer to FAA certification and a planned 2027 service entry. For sellers of the M2 Gen2, the clock just started ticking. The flight lasted 2.7 hours with a focus on evaluating the aircraft’s handling and key systems, reaching a maximum altitude of 41,000 ft at a speed of 263 knots. The aircraft will now enter an expanded flight testing phase as the company works toward FAA certification. The plan is for the M2 Gen3 to enter service in 2027.By the numbersTextron Aviation designed the M2 Gen3 with a focus on comfort and productivity for both pilot and passengers. The jet features a maximum range of 1,550 nm and a maximum payload of 1,510 pounds with a seating capacity of eight occupants and baggage capacity of up to 725 pounds. It has a flight deck equipped with the Garmin G3000 avionics system, utilizing the Garmin Autothrottles and optional Enhanced Vision System to improve navigation and optimize situational awareness. With an additional nod towards safety, the system supports Garmin Emergency Autoland capabilities. The jet features an interior that puts pilot and passenger comfort first, incorporating the latest styling accents and ambient lighting. The M2 Gen3 also has added utility over the previous generation with an optional folding side-facing seat to double as extra cargo space. While final performance specs have not been released, in comparison, the legacy Citation M2 Gen2 delivers a maximum cruise speed of 404 knots and a range of approximately 1,550 nautical miles. The jet is capable of climbing to a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet and is also equipped with a Garmin G3000 avionics suite. The Gen2 Market Just Got More Complicated If Textron holds its 2027 service entry timeline, Gen2 sellers have a narrower window than it looks. Certification programs slip, but buyers anticipating a discount will start waiting long before the FAA signs off — which means the pricing pressure arrives before the airplane does.
