Boeing has begun to expand its operations in Charleston, South Carolina. The company is investing $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades to increase production of the 787 Dreamliner.
The company announced its plans to expand back in Dec. 2024. The 787 Dreamliner is fully produced, fabricated and assembled at two locations in Charleston and more than 7,800 people are employed by the company in South Carolina. It stated that the expansion will create 500 new jobs in the area.
Leeham News reported that the expansion of the Charleston International Airport (CHS) will be an exact copy of the current site, doubling the FAL. With the expansion, Boeing plans to increase production of the 787 to a rate of 10 airplanes per month by 2026. When the expansion is completed in 2028, Leeham states that the company should be able to reach a production rate of 16 Dreamliners per month.
