Pratt & Whitney PW4000-94 Engine celebrates over 150M flight hours, 35 years in operation

Pratt & Whitney announced on Monday that the PW4000-94 Engine had accumulated over 150 million flight hours and had been in operation for 35 years.
Since entering service in 1987, over 2,500 engines have been delivered. This engine serves over 70 customers across 30 countries and powers aircraft like the Boeing 747/767, MD-11, Airbus A300/A310 and the KC-46A.
The engine covers a range of 52,000 to 62,000 pounds of thrust and has five major aircraft applications. The 94-inch engine was the first in Pratt & Whitney’s high-thrust family for supporting larger aircraft. Over 55% of this fleet serves the cargo industry.
The engine is approved for 180-minute extended-range twin-engine operations (ETOPS) and uses technology like single-crystal superalloy materials and full-authority digital electronic control (FADEC). The PW4000-94 Engine has long on-wing times and low maintenance costs.
“This milestone is a testament to the PW4000-94-inch engine’s legacy of reliability and performance,” said Bernie Zimmerman, vice president, Operational Commercial Engines, Pratt & Whitney. “The 94-inch offers excellent operational flexibility and fuel economy and lower noise versus the competing engine. It’s an engine that’s been proven on a variety of applications — passenger, cargo, and military.”

The PW4000-94 Engine joined the United Airlines fleet on its Boeing 747-400s in 1989. It later joined on the Boeing 767-300 at the beginning of 1991. This gave United Airlines a total of 89 aircraft with the engine.
“United has appreciated the reliability, great fuel economy and low maintenance costs of these engines,” VP of Technical Services at United, John Wiitala said. “It’s no surprise that these Pratt & Whitney engines have served United and our customers well for 33 years and counting.”
The PW4000 family of engines has a global network for MRO. Pratt & Whitney offered everything from maintenance and product support to customized plans for customers. The company has offered support and maintenance services for both on-wing and off-wing. Customers can receive care and maintenance with long-term agreements, payment plans, fixed-price services and transactional solutions.
